Abstract

The standard blood filter used in clinical practice is designed to remove all particulate matter larger than 170 microns during gravity-flow blood transfusion. Ultrafiltration of stored blood has been suggested to protect the lung from one cause of acute respiratory failure.
In an attempt to examine the adequacy of domestic transfusion filters, authors studied their physical aspects compared to the standard transfusion filter(170 microns pore) with microscopic examination.
The results are following;
1. The mean values of filter pore size are as following;
Fenwal recipient set (U.S.) 164.9¡¾ 10.8X157.3¡¾ 9.9 microns
A filter (Korea) 293.4¡¾ 35.9X156.3¡¾ 17.0 microns
B filter (Korea) 267.4¡¾ 14.1X 93.8¡¾105.4 microns
C filter (Korea) 333.3¡¾ 32.5X406.3¡¾ 20.1 microns
D filter (Korea) 251.9¡¾134.9X467.0¡¾ 43.6 microns
2. Domestic filters can not remove microemboli in stored blood and they are not constructed with permissible materials and basic considerations.
